When you look for kitchen cleaning tips online, you’re going to get a lot of expert advice about daily prevention to avoid grime build-up. Well, thanks a lot, Martha Stewart, but not all of us can devote our day to constructing elaborate pipe-cleaner devices for swabbing and cleaning a refrigerator. How are we supposed to keep up with the cleaning between work, cooking and our already-scarce down time?
Luckily, there are some easy and effective cleaning shortcuts. Sometimes a tidier kitchen is as easy as brewing a pot of coffee or microwaving your dinner. Those are the sorts of kitchen cleaning tips any reluctant scrubber can get behind, and they can even help improve food safety at home. Here we’ve gathered together four of these nearly effortless methods for a shinier, safer kitchen.
4 Kitchen Cleaning Tips That Will Save You Time and Effort
1. Spray away oven spills. Scrubbing the burnt-on remains of whatever bubbled over the top of your casserole dish and into your oven’s interior has to be the most labor-intensive kitchen cleaning task of them all. If you happen to catch the spill right after it happens, just throw a handful of coarse table salt directly on the mess while the oven (and the spill) is still hot. When things cool down, the salt will help prevent caking and will save you some elbow grease.
What if it’s too late to catch the spill in action? Just apply baking soda to the burned-on bits and use a spray bottle to moisten the area. Check on it a couple of times a day to make sure it stays damp. When the baking soda has loosened up the grime, just wipe it out of your oven.
2. Make the microwave clean itself. Ovens might require the most effort, but microwaves are almost certainly the grossest. And while we can’t just wish away all those tomato sauce splotches to improve food safety at home, there is a way to cut down on the amount of scrubbing it takes to remove them. Mix water and vinegar in a bowl and microwave it for five minutes. Then let sit for a couple extra minutes. A mild acidic steam (completely safe and non-toxic) will seep right into the crud that’s been hanging out in your microwave. Carefully remove the bowl and the rotating tray, then use a damp towel to wipe away the mess with ease.
3. Brew up a cup of cleanliness. A water-and-vinegar mixture can also be used to clean out the internal components of your coffee maker. Just pour a half-and-half mixture into the water reservoir, then power up for a complete cycle with a filter. When the brewing process is done, throw out the filter and let the pot sit and cool for 15 minutes. Empty the pot, then repeat the process with only water to clean out the vinegar (you might have to do this twice).
This is something that all java drinkers should be doing regularly to improve the flavor of their morning caffeine fix, but somehow we all forget. Making a pot of hot vinegar on a regular basis will ensure you’re getting the best out of Mr. Coffee.
4. Feed your disposal to clean your disposal. You’ve probably never grabbed a flashlight and peeked down into your garbage disposal. And while you’d think that ignorance truly would be bliss in this situation, it should be noted that some pretty nasty stuff can build up on your disposal blades. One cheap, effective and easy solution is to grind some ice cubes every other week or so. As the ice gets chopped, it scrubs off all sorts of grease and caked-on food, and it even sharpens the blades. You can also add a lemon or peels from an orange to deodorize your disposal.
